Google Analytics Universal for your mobile website

Google Analytics Universal, also commonly referred to as Universal Analytics, is a tracking tool which allows you to monitor traffic and traffic sources of your shop. To set up Google Analytics for your apps, read Google Analytics for Mobile Apps instead.

By setting up Google Analytics Universal at Shopgate, you can track customer visits, bounce rates, conversion rates, and more on your mobile website. Or, as Google puts it: "Universal Analytics is the new operating standard for Google Analytics." Please visit the Universal Analytics Upgrade Center to upgrade any outdated libraries if necessary.

Step 1: Create a property.

  1. Log into your Google Analytics account and navigate to Admin.
  2. Select your account. If you don't have one, click the drop-down under Account, then click Create new account.
  3. Create a property for your mobile website by clicking the drop-down under Property and then clicking Create new property.

Step 2: Get a Tracking ID for this property.

In the New Property screen:

  • Select Website for this property.
  • Provide a Website Name. Use the name of your mobile website.
  • Provide a Website URL. Use your mobile website URL.

When you're done, click Get Tracking ID. The Tracking ID for this property will be displayed on the next screen.

Step 3: Enter the Tracking ID at Shopgate.

  1. Log into your Shopgate Admin. Click Settings from the menu bar, then select Tracking Tools.
  2. Locate Google Analytics Universal and turn it to ON.
  3. A pop-up will open. Select a platform, paste the Google Tracking ID, and select your revenue type. Click Save.

If you use different properties to track your smartphone and tablet websites separately, repeat the steps above until all properties have been added.

That's it! You have successfully set up Google Analytics for your mobile website.

Set up advanced features

Enable eCommerce tracking

eCommerce tracking is vital to most shops. Your customers' shopping and checkout behavior, your products, sales performance, and similar factors can only be tracked when eCommerce is enabled in your Google Analytics.

To do so, follow the steps here:

 

  1. Navigate to the property you want to track.
  2. Click eCommerce Settings on the View column.
  3. Toggle the options to ON on the next page.

Configure a sales conversion funnel

Want to know how many customers actually go through the steps and click the BUY button? Set up a sales funnel and learn the secret!

To do so, follow the steps here:

  1. Go to your Admin page, select the shop you want to track, and click Goals in the View section.
  2. Click + NEW GOAL to create a goal for your sales funnel. This can be done in three easy steps.

Step 1: Goal setup

Select a Template and click Continue.

Step 2: Goal description

Give your goal a name and select Destination as the type.

Step 3: Goal details

Enter a Destination, turn on Funnel, and enter the steps.

See details in the table below.

Destination Your checkout success / thank you page. Choose Begins with and enter /checkout_success
Funnel Turn to ON.
Recommended steps: 
  Cart /cart*
  Register /register
  Login /login
  Select Shipping /checkout_payment_and_shipping
  Checkout /checkout_success
Required? Leave to NO.

That's it! Now you have set up a sales funnel in your Google Analytics.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my revenue type?

In your Shopgate Admin, you're able to specify your revenue type as either gross or net.

Gross refers to the total revenue or grand total associated with the transaction (e.g. 11.99). This value may include shipping, tax costs, or other adjustments to total revenue that you want to include as part of your revenue calculations.

Net refers to the transaction value excluding shipping, tax costs, or any other adjustment costs. 

Can I track my website on smartphone and tablet separately?

Absolutely! If you need to track more precisely, simply create a property for "smartphone website" and another for "tablet website" in Google Analytics. Once you've done that, head over to your Shopgate Admin and select the appropriate Platform for each Tracking ID (or "Google Analytics Code" in the screenshot).
