Shopgate Go

Notifications generated by a mobile app while the app is not actively in use are called push notifications*. Push notifications commonly appear as pop-up dialogs, banners, or small badges on the app icon, according to the user's settings.

On Shopgate apps, push notifications are used for marketing and communication purposes. When correctly set up, your customers can get timely information on special offers, discounts, new products, and much more.

At the moment, a push notification can open 5 different kinds of pages:

Page Description
Product The details page of the product you selected.
Category The category page you selected.
Page The app page you selected. This can be the homepage, cart page, or any page you created.
Coupon The cart opens, with a coupon code you selected added to the cart.
Search Query The search page with the pre-defined results.

* Your customers can only receive push notifications if the app is not actively being used in the foreground.

Test your push notification

Testing your push notifications before sending them out to the customers is always a good idea.

Anyone with a valid customer account can be a test user. You can send your test push notifications to multiple users at a time.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when testing a push notification:

  • Test users must first install your mobile app on their smartphone or tablet.
  • Test users must log into the app to receive push notifications.
  • Test users must select Agree in the app when asked to receive push notifications.
  • The test email address must be registered in your mobile app as a customer account.
  • Notifications will be sent immediately - you can't schedule a test notification.

To test a push notification, follow the steps below:

  1. Ask your test user to install your live app onto a smartphone or tablet.
  2. Ask your test user to log in or register an account with your app.
  3. In your Shopgate Admin, create a new push notification (Marketing → Push Messages → +Create new). Select Specific users. Enter the email address of your test user's app account email (one email per line) in the text field below.
  4. Click Save to complete the process and return to the push notifications list.push_notification_specific_users.png

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use emojis in a push notification?

To insert an emoji in a push notification, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Marketing → Push Messages → +Create new in your Shopgate Admin.
  2. Visit an emoji website such as or and copy the emoji you want to use.
  3. Paste it in the "Message" field.
Mac users can also bring up the emoji window by using the keyboard shortcut "ctrl + cmd + space" and click on an emoji to insert it.

The emojis might look different on different devices. Some of the news emojis may not be supported on the older devices. Test your push notification to make sure the emojis show up as you want them to be.

Why do I see more opens of a push notification on Android?

Due to the different usability of push notifications, studies have shown that on average, the open rate on Android is three times higher than that on iOS. Read this article for more information.

Why are my customers not receiving push notifications?

When the app is actively running in the foreground, customers will NOT receive any push notifications. Push notifications are only received if the app is closed or running in the background.

Best practices for push notifications

The best push notifications are those that are short and actionable. In general, iOS users see around 120 characters, while Android devices only show about 40 characters without the notification being expanded. Because of this, your users may only see the first half of a sentence when your push notification pops up.

To make the most of this, use these tips:

  • Try to place the most important keywords at the beginning.
  • Shorten the notification to one line, if possible.
  • Use emojis instead of words to save the precious screen real estate and attract attention at the same time!

Another good practice is to give users incentives to tap or slide on your push notifications. Only send a push notification when there is something your users can act upon, such as:

  • A coupon
  • A sales event
  • An abandoned cart that needs to be completed
